About Domesticating IT

Technology has infiltrated every last corner of the business world and every industry. There is no shortage of software developers, database administrators, or implementation consultants who can provide sound technical services in their respective areas of expertise. But what if you need help with the big picture? Can your software developer optimize your web site for search engine marketing? Can your database administrator put together a strategy for linking lead collecting on your web page with a cloud-based CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system?  I can.

  • Marketing - Leverage technology for inbound marketing, search engine optimization, content creation (blogging), and social media campaigns.  You may have a pretty web site, but does it work?
  • Sales - Connect lead generation activities into a CRM system that is fully integrated with your web site, print and email promotions, and social media channels.  You may have an effective sales team, but can you measure it?
  • Infrastructure – Make sure your technology infrastructure is secure, has a disaster recovery and contingency plan, is aligned with your business, and well supported by your hardware.  Your IT infrastructure may be working well enough, but can you sleep at night?

If you answered “No” or “I’m not sure” to any of those questions, drop me a line.

“Domesticating IT” Defined

hus – band – ry [huzh-buhn-dree] *
- noun

1. the cultivation and production of edible crops or of animals for food; agriculture; farming.
2. the science of raising crops or food animals.
3. careful or thrifty management; frugality, thrift, or conservation.
4. the management of domestic affairs or of resources generally.

I chose the “animal husbandry” metaphor for this blog because in my nearly twenty years of developing and implementing technology solutions, I have learned that information technology is indeed a wild beast that must be tamed and domesticated. This process is not unlike the process undertaken by our ancestors thousands of years ago, which became a fundamental reason why humans were able to establish permanent settlements and, ultimately, establish civilizations.

Similarly, businesses must domesticate their information technology in order to maximize their competitiveness.
